Every year on October 29, we invite you to remember the innocent people, victims of political repression, who died from the Soviet state terror. The memory of terror, its victims and resistance to state violence, the memory, the very preservation of which became a manifestation of resistance from the very first years of Bolshevik power, is still relevant in our time. The lack of proper recognition of the staggering scope of repressions by the Soviet government and the lack of awareness in society of repressions as a crime of the state against its citizens and the lack of work to eliminate the basis for such crimes is one of the important reasons for the current return of history.
This invitation is addressed primarily to those who live in Western Europe and support the mission of the Memorial. This year we invite you to gather in Venice for this public action at the back of the closed Russian Pavilion of the Venice Biennale. The choice of location is symbolic, and we will read the names of the victims of the Soviet terror of many nationalities in the language of your choice.

Soviet-born, Australian artist Nina Sanadze will create a sculpture especially for this action – a replica of the Solovetsky Stone monument in Moscow’s Lubyanka Square where Returning the Names event is traditionally held since 2007. FSB headquarters, formerly KGB, where orders for repressions where initiated and issued, form the backdrop for this monument in Moscow. Several places in the former Soviet Union have their own Solovetsky Stones – these are monuments to the victims of Soviet state terror which were originally brought directly from the Solovetsky Gulag in the 1990s.
We will carry Solovetsky Stone replica around Venice, approximately 500 meters, to the Returning the Names action location behind the Russian Pavilion. If you want to join us on this walk, then we will meet at the Garibaldi monument at 11:30am, October 29, 2022.
For 15 years, Returning the Names campaigns have been held in different cities and countries with tens of thousands of participants. We hope that it will happen again this year. 2022 is the year of a new catastrophe and new victims. It seems that it is much more important to remember those who are dying today and to stop the tragedy unfolding before our eyes. We are sure that Returning the Names action still matters today. This action reminds us of the most important, unconditional principle: there is nothing more valuable than human life, which means that the state has no right to kill people. Neither in 1937 nor in 2022. And the more people agree with this, the more likely it is that the catastrophe can be stopped and prevented in the future.
If you cannot come to Venice, we suggest you choose a historical or symbolic place in your city, gather in a small group and read the names of the dead people. It seems important to us to continue the action in a public format – the context of different cities allows us to do this in different ways. You can do it right on 29th of October by going live on our broadcast. You can pre-record your reading of names and send us a video. We will stream all videos on 29th of October 2022.
Memorial has been liquidated by Russian court decision but we will always continue our work. Ежегодно 29 октября мы приглашаем вас вспомнить невинных людей, жертв политических репрессий, погибших от Советского государственного террора. Память о терроре, его жертвах и сопротивлении государственному насилию, память, само сохранение которой стало проявлением сопротивления с первых же лет большевистской власти, актуальна и в наше время. Отсутствие надлежащего признания репрессий Советской властью и отсутствие в обществе осознания репрессий как преступления государства против своих граждан и отсутствие работы по устранению основы для таких преступлений являются причинами нынешнего возврата истории.
В этом году Возвращение имен пройдет во многих городах и странах.
В Венеции мы приглашаем вас на публичную акцию у стен закрытого Русского
Венецианского Павильона Биеннале. Выбор места символичен, и мы будем читать имена жертв советского террора многих национальностей на выбранном вами языке.

Специально для этой акции Австралийская художница Советского происхождения Нина Санадзе создаст скульптуру — копию монумента «Соловецкий камень» на Лубянской площади в Москве, где с 2007 года традиционно проходит акция «Возвращение Имен». Штаб-квартира ФСБ, ранее КГБ, где инициировались и отдавались приказы о репрессиях, служит фоном для этого памятника в Москве. В нескольких местах бывшего Советского Союза есть свои Соловецкие камни – это памятники жертвам Советского государственного террора. Огромные гранитные камни изначально были привезены прямо из Соловецкого Гулага в 1990-х годах. Мы будем нести эту копию Соловецкого камня по Венеции, примерно 500 метров до места акции «Возвращение Имен». Если хотите присоединится и помочь, то мы встретимся у памятника Гарибальди в 11:30, 29 октября 2022 года.
На протяжении 15 лет акции «Возвращения имен» проходят в разных городах и странах, в них принимают участие десятки тысяч человек. Мы надеемся, что это произойдет во многих местах снова и в этом году. 2022 год — год новой катастрофы и новых жертв. Кажется, что гораздо важнее помнить о погибающих сегодня и о прекращении разворачивающейся на наших глазах трагедии. Мы уверены, что «Возвращение имён» имеет значение и сегодня. Эта акция напоминает о важнейшем, безусловном принципе: нет ничего ценнее человеческой жизни, а значит, государство не имеет права убивать людей. Ни в 1937-м, ни в 2022-м. И чем больше людей согласятся с этим, тем вероятнее, что катастрофу удастся остановить — и не допустить в будущем.
Нам кажется важным продолжить акцию в публичном формате — контекст разных городов позволяет это делать по-разному. Вы можете сделать это прямо 29 октября, выйдя в прямой эфир на нашем канале. Вы можете заранее записать чтение имён и прислать нам видео. Все ролики мы выложим в общий эфир «Возвращения имен» 29 октября.
